How KENP earnings work

When a Kindle Unlimited subscriber reads your book, you don't earn a per-copy royalty — you earn a small amount per KENP page (Kindle Edition Normalized Pages) actually read. Amazon funds a global “KDP Select Global Fund” every month and divides it across total page reads, so the per-page rate floats slightly each month. The US rate has hovered around $0.0040–$0.0048 for several years.

The math is simple: monthly KENP page reads × per-page rate = monthly KENP royalty. The calculator above pre-loads the most recent known rate per marketplace, but you can override it with whatever Amazon published in the latest payout report.

KENP optimization tips

  1. 1Write longer books. A 600-page novel earns roughly 2× the KENP royalty of a 300-page novel per full read-through. Series + box sets dominate KU income for this reason.
  2. 2Front-load your hook. KENP only pays for pages actually read. A slow start kills your earnings — many KU subscribers DNF early if the opening doesn't grab them.
  3. 3KDP Select limits you to Amazon only. Enrolling in KDP Select means you can't sell the same eBook on Apple Books, Kobo, B&N, or Google Play. For most indie authors in romance/thriller, the KU money makes it worth it; for non-fiction it's usually not.
  4. 4Track 3-month averages. KENP fluctuates monthly. Use a rolling 3-month KENP average for any income projection — single-month numbers lie.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KENP?

KENP stands for Kindle Edition Normalized Pages. It's Amazon's way of measuring how much of your book a Kindle Unlimited subscriber actually reads — normalised so a 300-page book that's mostly images and whitespace doesn't earn the same as a 300-page text-dense novel. You earn a per-page rate for every KENP page read.

How is the per-page rate set?

Amazon funds the KDP Select Global Fund every month — a pot of money distributed across all KDP Select authors based on total KENP reads. Your per-page rate is calculated by dividing the fund by the total page reads. The rate fluctuates monthly between roughly $0.0040 and $0.0048 USD, with similar variation in other currencies.

Do I have to be in KDP Select to earn KENP?

Yes. KENP page-read royalties are only paid on books enrolled in KDP Select — the program that makes your book available exclusively on Kindle and via Kindle Unlimited. Wide-distribution books (those sold on Apple Books, Kobo, etc.) don't earn KENP, only per-sale royalties.

Where do I find my page reads and the latest rate?

Page reads are in your KDP Reports → Sales Dashboard, listed as 'KENP Read'. The exact per-page rate is shown in your KDP Reports → Payments dashboard each month — that's the authoritative source. Amazon also publishes the monthly KDP Select Global Fund total publicly on the KDP Select page (kdp.amazon.com/select), so you can sanity-check the program is alive and growing. You can paste the latest rate into the calculator to override the default.

Are KENP earnings stable enough to plan around?

Month-to-month KENP earnings can fluctuate ±15% based on the rate, your book's discovery, and seasonality. Use a 3-month rolling average when projecting future income — single-month spikes from a promo feature or a viral TikTok aren't repeatable.

How do KENP earnings compare to a paid sale?

A 300 KENP-page novel earns roughly $1.20 per full read-through at the US rate ($0.0040/page), vs $3.28 for a $4.99 sale on the 70% tier. KU subscribers don't 'buy' your book, so KENP is additive — you earn the per-page rate on top of any sales. For genres with heavy KU readership (romance, thriller, urban fantasy), KENP can be 50%+ of total income.

Why is the rate different in other countries?

Each Amazon marketplace has its own KDP Select Global Fund and its own KENP page rate. UK rates are typically around £0.0040/page, German rates around €0.0035/page, Japanese rates ~¥0.55/page. The calculator includes the most-recent defaults per marketplace, and you can override with the live rate.
